Bob Monahan looked back on 2015 and the start of his radio show, Everyday Law. He talked about some of his favorite shows of 2015 as well as some upcoming guests for 2016. Bob also introduced a new project for 2016, “My Small Claims Coach.”
Bob grew up in Waukegan, Illinois, the son of a doctor and teacher. He felt that Waukegan was a great place to grow up. His education included attendance at Carmel High School in Mundelein, the University of Chicago and law school at the University of Virginia. Bob lived and worked in New York City for nine years. He met his wife, Maria, in New York. After starting a family, Bob and Maria and their young children moved back to Lake County, Illinois in 2008.
Their move to Lake County coincided with the Recession, making it difficult to find work as few law firms were hiring at that time. Bob decided to strike out on his own and opened his own practice in 2009 in Gurnee, Illinois. He initially took a variety of cases including a number of small claims cases; but his practice has branched out to other areas including personal injury and probate. In June of 2015, he started a radio show, “Everyday Law” which airs every other Thursday on WRLR of Round Lake.
Bob has produced about 20 shows so far. He enjoys learning about different areas of the law through his many guests. One of his favorite shows was with Judge Margaret Mullen. Bob felt that her presence on the show helped legitimatize “Everyday Law”. They discussed “Access to Justice” and “Small Claims Mediation”; courthouse programs that Judge Mullen spearheaded in Lake County. Another popular guest was attorney Jeff O’Kelly, who practices probate law. Jeff made the often difficult topic of wills and estates accessible and humorous. Mary Stanton, of the Lake County State’s Attorney, spoke about cyber and white collar crime. Future topics for “Everyday Law” include divorce and child custody with Gary Schlessinger and Mike Strauss, and orders of protection with Steve DeRue of the Lake County State’s Attorney.
Besides the radio show, Bob has started another new project called “My Small Claims Coach”. Through his law practice, Bob has seen a need for educating people on using the small claims process in court. Many times, he has received inquiries about legal claims that clearly reflect an injustice but are too small monetarily, to make it practical for an attorney to handle. There is a small claims process in place in the court system for people who want to handle their own legal claim, but Bob feels many people are too intimidated to use this system. “My Small Claims Coach” is a way to educate and inform people about that process. Bob recently started the website, www.mysmallclaimscoach.com. Though it is still a work in progress, Bob plans to post articles about topics that will help people understand and succeed with the small claims process.
2016 promises to be an exciting year with more great guests on “Everyday Law”, as well as the growth of “My Small Claims Coach” project.
